But the thing about deserts, or oceans, or forests, or wildernesses in general, is that when you set foot in them, you really don’t know how big the thing is, you don’t know if you are going to walk in circles, die of starvation, or just return defeated with your tail between your legs

P2: Periods of transformation are marked by leaving what is, leaving safety, leaving comfort, leaving the known, and moving into… basically… The Unknown. There are no guarantees for what will happen when we step into a newness, are there? There is often an idea of a goal in mind, but we really do not know where we’re going, or where we might end up. I mean. Do we ever know?…

P3: I am pretty sure that that’s why I loved all of Tolkien’s books ever since I was a child. They take you into Mirkwood and jumble you up good, and you meet all your demons and fears in the dark, and you are caged and trapped by unknown adversaries, climb to the top of the tallest tree and all you see is endless trees in all directions and your heart sinks, but then the author tells the reader, not the hero, that it’s simply because you are at the bottom of a valley and the edge is actually not that far… and you have to figure out ways to make yourself invisible at times, run away, help your party out through the underwater… aye yi yi. Perfection. Sometimes we are leaving (the house of our father, or our Egypt, or the shire, or an abusive relationship, or our countries, or our given names) because we are trying to get somewhere, and sometimes we are leaving simply because where we are, or what is, is not where we are truly meant to be. Which is not the same as avoidance, but let’s not go there. :)
